Piano Project: 3/9/13

Bloomingdale's sixth annual Piano Project took place on March 9th, 2013. The Piano Project features students and faculty playing together on three concerts celebrating a particular musical theme. The 2013 topic was: Music from Russia: Past and Present. Over 50 students combined with eleven faculty members to perform music by a diverse range of composers including Kabalevsky, Liadov, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, Shostakovich, and Tchaikovsky, among others.

Faculty member Roberto Hidalgo performed works by Mussorgsky and Rachmaninov

Bathsheba Marcus, faculty member and artistic coordinator of the project, was joined by faculty member
Tania Tachkova in Rachmaninov's Suite No. 1 for Two Pianos.

Adam Spielvogel performed March from Children's Notebook, Op. 69, No. 1 by Shostakovich

Solange Sylvain and Ada Carlston played Gretchaninov's March of the Toy Soldiers, Op. 98, No. 3.

Jam Session: 3/4/13

Open to the public as well as BSM students, Jam Session is an inclusive jazz experience—students of all levels, ages, and musical backgrounds are welcome to join. Three faculty members, Matt Buttermann, guitar, Kevin Farrell, bass, and Jeremy Noller, percussion, form a rhythm section and play alongside and coach students. The event encourages improvisation and creative freedom and intends to foster collaboration between students and faculty members while also promoting rock and jazz music at BSM, both for students who already study these genres in their lesson and for students who want to explore a new musical direction.

The picture below is from last week's session which included several students from Jazz at Lincoln Center's Middle School Jazz Academy (a 2013 Bloomingdale program partner) as well as members of the BSM rock band.

Jam Session meets on the first Monday of each month from 7-8:30. Remaining sessions for the year include April 8th, May 6th, and June 3rd. There are no reservations necessary to join and students may attend one, two, or all three of the upcoming dates. A $10 cover charge is payable at the door.
